In forcibly removing thousands of
Jews from their homes and businesses in Gaza, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel
Sharon came up with yet another justification for this illegal, immoral and
strategically illogical move.
In a televised speech this week on
the eve of the unilateral surrender of Jewish communities to terrorists, Sharon
praised Gaza's settlers as "pioneers," but insisted that it is time for Israel
to leave the area after 38 years.
"We cannot hold Gaza for good," he
said. "More than a million Palestinians live there, doubling their numbers every
generation."
Now that may sound like sensible
pragmatism. Jews are outnumbered and the demographics are getting worse.
But, in reality, it makes no sense.
It is nothing more than excuse-making for irresponsible, shortsighted and
outrageous actions.
If this is strictly a numbers game,
Israel ought to consider packing up and leaving the Middle East altogether right
now. Because the fact of the matter is that Jews are vastly outnumbered in their
neighborhood. Period. End of story. There are 300 million Arabs in the Middle
East and fewer than 5 million Jews.
When Israelis allow themselves to be
chased out of Gaza because they are outnumbered, they are inviting further
retreats and a feeling of inevitability among Muslim Arabs that all the Jews can
be eliminated from the region.
Gush Katif, the block of Jewish
settlements on the outskirts of the Gaza Strip, are separated by miles from the
Arab population centers in Gaza. In fact, the distance between the Arab
population center in Gaza City and Gush Katif is greater than the distance
between Gaza and the Jewish community in Ashkelon. Wouldn't the same psychology
dictate a strategic withdrawal from Ashkelon?
Even more to the point – and maybe
this will hit home with Sharon – Gush Katif is further from Gaza than the prime
minister's private ranch. Why haven't we heard of any plans by Sharon to turn
over his private ranch to the Arabs?
No, the very fact that Jews are so
outnumbered in the Middle East is a reason not to turn over any more Jewish
lands and properties. It's a slow-death strategy.
Think about it. The Arab population
within Israel is growing, too. Will Israel continue to turn over increasingly
Arab communities within the country to the new Palestinian state?
And why is this population transfer a
one-way deal? Why is it that Arab minorities among Jewish majorities are not
relocated?
Very simple. The Jews have always
believed they could get along with Arab neighbors. Unfortunately, that attitude
is not shared by the so-called "Palestinians," who say no Jews will be allowed
to live within their new state.
One must also view this "disengagement"
in the context of history. The Israeli Defense Forces disengaged from more than
90 percent of the Gaza Strip over a decade ago, leaving these Arab areas
entirely under the rule of the Palestinian Authority. In other words, the "disengagement"
happened a long time ago. The forcible relocation of peaceful, civilian Jews
from their property in Gaza has nothing to do with "disengagement." The very
term is deceptive.
It is, instead, just as Hamas views
it, an unconditional surrender of Jewish land to Islamic terrorists. It is a
reward for 10 years of continued terrorism – suicide attacks, mortar barrages,
rocket launches, shootings.
Make no mistake about it. The Israeli
government is providing new incentives for terrorism with the withdrawal from
Gaza and other Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria.
Further, there is historical and
biblical significance to this withdrawal. Some have argued wrongly that Gaza was
never part of the historical land of Israel. In fact, Gaza is mentioned in the
Bible more than 20 times. The land was granted as an inheritance to the tribe of
Judah. Samson destroyed the pagan temple in Gaza.
If the Jews say they have no
historical deed in Gaza, it's tough to make a case they have a history anywhere
else in the Middle East. Any way you look at it – politically, pragmatically,
historically, strategically, militarily, biblically – Ariel Sharon's decision to
evacuate Gaza simply makes no sense.

"Sou palestino, filho de palestinos, nascido
na palestina (vim para
o Brasil com 3 anos, voltei a Palestina com 19, fiquei 10 anos por lá e
voltei pro Brasil no ano passado). Ha muito que venho lendo esta coluna
e pude encontrar aqui as mais variadas opiniões sobre o conflito no
Oriente Médio e acho que posso colaborar. Nestes 10 anos na palestina ví
muita coisa errada sendo feita por ambos os lados, mas percebi que a
opinião de todos aqui é basicamente formada pelos fatos recortados dos
jornais e gostaria de acrescentar alguns pontos que acho importante.
Parentes próximos meus tinham bons negócios (mercado de frutas) nas
cidades de Ramalah, Jericó e Jerusalem. A partir de 1994, certos
oficiais locais da Força Policial Palestina começaram a cobrar propinas
como taxa de segurança, da mesma forma que a máfia fez e da mesma forma
que os comandos criminosos fazem aqui no Brasil. Durante anos pagamos
muito dinheiro a estes bandidos pois meu tio (dono do negócio), achava
que o dinhe!!iro estava ajudando a Autoridade Palestina a construir
hospitais, escolas, etc (coisas que nunca vimos sendo feitas na
palestina, senão com dinheiro vindo do exterior, normalmente de ONGS).
Em 1999 as taxas de segurança estavam cada vez mais altas e meu tio,
depois de muito conversa com os chefes de polícia de Jericó decidiu
mandar o pagamento pela metade. Na manhã seguinte, seu filho do meio
(tinha 4 primos) foi fuzilado pela Fatah (que controla a polícia
palestina) no caminho de Jerusalem, juntamente com mais dois motoristas
dos caminhões, os 3 sendo considerados espiões de Israel. O pavor tomou
conta da família. Meu tio partiu 1 semana depois com meu primo mais
velho para Ramalah para tentar uma reunião com Arafat. Nos disse por
telefone que tinha conseguido uma audiencia no mesmo dia e de noite
recebemos a terrivel noticia que ambos haviam sido fuzilados na frente
do escritório de Arafat (este onde o animal está preso hoje). O resto da
família fugiu para a Jordânia e de lá!! para o Líbano e de lá vim para o
Brasil. Por isso, não se enganem, só existe uma figura neste mundo que
pode ser mais nociva para os palestinos que o carniceiro Sharon, e o
nome da besta é: Yasser Arafat. Nestes 10 anos trabalhei para alguns
judeus em Jerusalem e posso dizer que o trabalhador árabe tem mais
direitos e é mais respeitado em Israel que nos Territórios Autônomos.
Por isto não se deve aqui neste Fórum dos Leitores generalizar os judeus
como se todos fossem Sharon, como também não se deve generalizar que
todo palestino é Arafat, o terrorista. Qualquer generalização do tipo
descrito acima, não é nada mais que o mais puro racismo.Tenho plena
convicção, juntamente com muitos palestinos (a grande maioria deles
calados pelo terror da Fatah), de que a Palestina vai sobreviver a
Sharon, que mais cedo ou mais tarde iremos ter a nossa tão sonhada
liberdade, mas não tenho tanta certeza se a Palestina vai sobreviver a
Arafat, não sei se vai sobreviver a ditadura dos grupos terroristas, não
sei se vai sobreviver ao fundamentalismo religioso. Apenas a democracia
e a justiça (não esta justiça sumária de Arafat e seus 40 ladrões) trará
esperança a nós palestinos. Em tempo, Joana de Campinas, não existe
nenhum campo de refugiados em Kfarz Darum, nem existe nenhum orfanato em
Katif Aniz, pelo simples fato que não existe nem na Cisjordânia, nem em
Gaza, nenhum lugar com estes nomes. Francisco Rocha da Europa, concordo
com voce em algumas coisas, os EUA são os principais financiadores de
Israel, mas também são os principais financiadores da Palestina (aí vem
de novo o desconhecimento profundo das pessoas que só se atém!! as
notícias de jornal), haja visto que o dinheiro que chega lá é via ações
humanitárias da ONU e voce deve saber que quem carrega a ONU nas costas
é os EUA. Em tempo (ainda), o povo Palestino praticamente sustenta as
escolas, creches e hospitais com dinheiro dos palestinos que moram nos
EUA e de ONGS de lá. As ONGS europeias também arrecadam e enviam muito
dinheiro para cá, mas os desavisados entregam para a Autoridade
Palestina que quando não manda este dinheiro de volta pra Suiça, manda
para a Jordânia, para sustentar as beneces dos familiares dos burocratas
palestinos que ali residem. Ta aí um bom desafio para voce, Francisco da
Rocha: monte uma ONG para arrecadar dinheiro ai na Alemanha para montar
escolas profissionalizantes lá na Palestina, eles precisam muito disso
lá, mas lembre-se: não mande nada em dinheiro, a Autoridade Palestina é
como político brasileiro, voce manda 1000 reais, eles investem 10 reais,

O ANTI-SEMITISMO
A
veterana jornalista e escritora volta a se destacar ao publicar um artigo em que
denuncia o anti-semitismo que se esconde sob apoio à causa palestina e as duras
críticas que se fazem à Israel na mídia européia. A jornalista italiana
provocouuma enorme polêmica após
os atentados do dia 11 de setembro, quando defendeu os valores da cultura
ocidental frente ao Islã, atacando a imigração muçulmana para a Europa.
Aquele artigo, chamado “A raiva e o Orgulho”, publicado por EL MUNDO, deu
origem a um livro que, na Itália, vendeu mais de 1 milhão de exemplares e que
será em breve publicado na Espanha.
"Eu
acho uma vergonha que na Itália haja uma manifestação de indivíduos que,
vestidos de camikazes berram infames injúrias contra Israel, exibem fotografias
de líderes israelenses com uma suástica pintada sobre eles e incitam o povo a
odiar os judeus, e dizendo que, para ver os judeus voltarem aos campos de
concentração, e às câmaras de extermínio estariam dispostos a vender um harém
ou então a própria mãe.
Eu
acho uma vergonha que a Igreja católica permita que um bispo do Vaticano, um
senhor que não é descendente dos santos e que foi pego em Jerusalém com um
arsenal de armas e explosivos escondidos em compartimentos camuflados de sua
sagrada Mercedes, participar naquelas manifestações e se colocar diante de um
microfone para dar graças, em nome de Deus, aos kamicazes que massacram os
judeus nas pizzarias e supermercados, além de chamá-los de “mártires que vão
à morte como à uma festa”.
É
uma vergonha que na França _ a França da Igualdade-Liberdade-Fraternidade, se
queimem sinagogas, se aterrorizem os judeus e se profanem cemitérios. È uma
vergonha que na Holanda, na Alemanha e na Dinamarca, os jovens levantam a
bandeiras palestinas como, antes, faziam as vanguardas de Mussolini ao ostentar
as insígnias fascistas. É uma vergonha que em quase todas as universidades
européias os estudantes palestinos plantem e alimentem o anti-semitismo. Que na
Suíça tenham pedido que se retire o prêmio Nobel da Paz de Shimon Peres
concedido em 1994, e que se reivindique o símbolo da pomba da paz com o ramo de
oliveira, que se identifica mais com Arafat. É uma vergonha que os membros do
Comitê, um Comitê que (ao que parece) premia mais o interesse político que o
mérito, tenham tomado em consideração a petição. Ao inferno o Prêmio
Nobel, e glória a quem não o receba.
É
uma vergonha (voltando à Itália) que as televisões estatais contribuíam com
o ressurgimento do anti-semitismo chorando só os mortos palestinos enquanto
ninguémchora os mortos
israelenses, só falam deles de passagem e, com frequência, de forma
negligente. È uma vergonha que acolham em seus debates, e com tanta deferência,
aos mesmos que ontem celebraram o massacre de Nova York e hoje celebram as matanças
de Jerusalém, Haifa, Netania e tel Aviv. È uma vergonha que a imprensa também
faça o mesmo, que se indigne porque em Belém os tanques israelenses cercaram a
Igreja da Natividade, e que não se indignem porque nesta mesma igreja, 200
terroristas bem armados com metralhadoras, munições e explosivos (entre eles vários
chefes do Hamas e da Al Aqsa) sejam hóspedes bem-vindos dos freis (que, sem dúvida,
aceitam dos militares dos tanques as garrafas de água mineral e provisões).
É
uma vergonha que, ao dar o número de israelenses mortos desde o começo da
Segunda Intifada (412 em 13 de 1bril), um conhecido jornal considerou justo
colocar, e letras grandes que em seus acidentes em estradas morrem mais pessoas
(600 ao ano).
É
uma vergonha o Osservatore Romano, que dizer, o jornal do Papa, um
Papa que não
faz muito tempo deixou no Muro das Lamentações uma carta pedindo perdão aos
judeus, acuse de extermínio um povo exterminado por milhões de cristãos
europeus. É uma vergonha que aos sobreviventes daquele extermínio, gente que
ainda tem o número marcado em seu braço, se negue o direito a reagir, a
defender-se, a não se deixar exterminar de novo. É uma vergonha que em nome de
Jesus (um judeu sem o qual eles estariam todos desempregados), os responsáveis
pelas nossas paróquias e centros sociais cortejem os assassinos dos que, em
Jerusalém, não podem sair para comer uma pizza nem para comprar ovos sem voar
pelos ares.É uma vergonha que estejam no mesmo lado dos mesmo que
inauguraram o terrorismo matando-nos em aviões, nos aeroportos, nas Olimpíadas
e dos que hoje, continuam se divertindo matando jornalistas ocidentais.
Fusilando-os, seqüestrando-os, degolando-os e decapitando-os. (Depois da
publicação de “A Raiva e o Orgulho” na Itália, quiseram fazer o mesmo
comigo. Citando versos do Corão exortam seus irmãos das mesquitas da
comunidade islâmica a castigarmeem
nome de Alá. A me matar. Inclusive a morrer comigo. Como é alguém que conhece
bem o inglês, então eu respondo “fuck you”)."

Jenin 'massacre' reduced to death toll of 56

JENIN, West Bank - Palestinian officials yesterday put the death toll at
56 in the two-week Israeli assault on Jenin, dropping claims of a
massacre of 500 that had sparked demands for a U.N. investigation.
The official Palestinian body count, which is not disproportionate to
the 33 Israeli soldiers killed in the incursion, was disclosed by
Kadoura Mousa Kadoura, the director of Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement
for the northern West Bank, after a team of four Palestinian-appointed
investigators reported to him in his Jenin office.
[Two weeks ago, when European and particularly London newspapers were
reporting estimates of "hundreds" massacred, Israeli sources in
Washington said they expected the Palestinian toll to reach "45 to
55."]
U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan suggested yesterday, in the wake of
the Palestinian body count, that he may disband a U.N. fact-finding team
that was to visit the camp to determine whether a massacre had taken
place.
Mr. Annan was responding to a decision by the Israeli security Cabinet
earlier in the day not to cooperate with the U.N. team.
The U.N.-Israeli dispute appeared unrelated to the Palestinian admission
there had been no massacre.
The Palestinians had suggested that most of the bodies were buried
beneath the rubble of houses bulldozed by Israeli troops. No digging for
bodies was taking place here, and there was no stench that could have
come from decaying human flesh.
The earlier Palestinian claims had sparked international outrage and
prompted the Bush administration to press Israel to accept a
fact-finding mission by the United Nations, an organization that the
Jewish state regards as having a pro-Palestinian bias.
Mr. Kadoura yesterday showed a reporter for The Washington Times the
official Palestinian list of those who died. It contained 50 names. Six
additional bodies, he said, had not been identified.
He no longer used the ubiquitous Palestinian charge of
"massacre" and
instead portrayed the battle as a "victory" for Palestinians in
resisting Israeli forces. "Here the Israelis, who tried to break the
Palestinian willpower, have been taught a lesson," Mr. Kadoura said.
He insisted that Israel had tried but failed, thanks to the heavy
fighting, to destroy the entire warren of homes in the camp that had
housed 11,000 people.
The destruction, pictured graphically on television, appeared linked to
Israeli bulldozing of the houses from which the remnant of the
resistance forces were firing.
In fact, it covers the size of a large football field and constitutes
only about 10 percent of the housing in the camp, and a far smaller
proportion of the housing in the city, which was largely left untouched
by the Israeli incursion.
The figures shown to The Times included 233 injured persons, mainly men.
The figures revealed that 18 persons had been injured and one had died
after the fighting had ended, the result of accidentally detonating
either shells left after the fighting, or booby traps that were set by
Palestinian gunmen throughout the camp.
A British expert attached to the International Red Cross said these
booby traps were almost identical to those used by the Irish Republican
Army.
The British claim suggested to analysts that IRA guerrillas were
schooled in terrorist weaponry and irregular warfare, as were many
radical guerrilla movements, in Palestinian, Syrian and Iranian training
camps in Lebanon.
From behind a desk bedecked by portraits of Mr. Arafat, a string of past
"martyrs" and of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, the Palestinian
chief
official in the city, who is also the Fatah leader, portrayed in an
interview the events as another chapter in a long saga of resistance to
foreign invaders - from Crusader times onward - that, he said, had made
Jenin "the heart of Palestine" for centuries.
The propaganda war continues, meanwhile, in the refugee camp itself.
Families whose homes had been destroyed were ordered to sit and lie
inside tents pitched near the destruction, to be available for
interviews and filming with foreign reporters and photographers. At
dusk, with the press opportunities concluded, they returned to houses
offered to them in the undamaged city or in the rest of the refugee
camp.
Other young men, members of various factions, have been on duty in the
camp's narrow streets, eager to conduct foreign correspondents to places
where they say Israelis killed militants after they surrendered or had
been captured.
Others in the city say the resistance to the Israeli incursion had been
carried out by only about 10 percent of the militants who had originally
been in the area. Most had retreated into the hills or into city back
streets as the Israelis entered the area, they said.
Families living in houses directly opposite the destroyed area have told
The Washington Times that Israeli soldiers, who temporarily occupied
their houses just before the final battle began, treated them without
violence and assured them: "You will not be harmed."
They confined the 36 members of the Abu Khalil family to two rooms,
allowing them out one by one, and set up a snipers' point upstairs
through two holes in the wall - under a family framed message in Arabic:
"There is No God but Allah and Mohammed is His Messenger."
They confiscated identity cards but left them on the table before
slipping out during the night.
At the United Nations in New York, Undersecretary-General Kieran
Prendergast said "a thorough, credible and balanced report on recent
events in Jenin refugee camp would not be possible without the
cooperation of the government of Israel."
"Since it appears from today's Cabinet statement by Israel that the
difficulties in the way of deployment of the fact-finding team will not
be resolved anytime soon, the secretary-general is minded to disband the
team," he told reporters after briefing the U.N. Security Council.
Diplomats said Mr. Prendergast told council members that Mr. Annan was
leaning toward disbanding the three-member team, which has been joined
by numerous advisers. The team, which was to have arrived in Jenin on
Saturday, remained in Geneva yesterday.
The Security Council is to take up the issue of whether or not to
disband the mission at a meeting today.
The United States put forward the resolution adopted by the Security
Council welcoming the dispatch of a U.N. team to find out what happened
in Jenin during the Israeli military's attacks.
Israel initially agreed to the idea, but subsequently raised questions
over the composition of the team, its scope of inquiry, who could be
called as a witness and what documents would be presented to the panel.
Mr. Prendergast said that "with every passing day, it becomes more
difficult to determine what happened" in Jenin. U.S. Ambassador John
Negroponte said Mr. Annan was considering whether to let the
fact-finding team begin its work in Geneva or "simply abandoning the
mission on the assumption that satisfactory terms of reference could not
be worked out."

Não estamos passando o Pessach desse ano em clima de
primavera e frescor do florescer das kalaniot. É um
pessach cinza. Surpreendentemente, está frio e nublado
para essa época do ano. O clima do leil haseder desse
ano foi diferente nas casas de Israel.
Com os acontecimentos dos últimos dias, a pergunta "Ma
nishtana ...?" , ganhou um outro significado: ... foi
substituída por
outra pergunta: "será que todos os meus queridos
estarão be seder (bem) nessa noite? Estarão todos seguros?
A ansiedade se intensificou depois do massacre em
Natania. Vinte e duas pessoas assassinadas por estarem
juntas comemorando a libertação do inimigo opressor.
Vinte e dois judeus na terra de Israel assassinadas
por serem judeus. Pânico de sair as ruas, de estar em
lugares públicos e em aglomerações nos tranca dentro
das casas, lembrança dos guetos.
E aí, no final do chag, uma família como qualquer
outra, como a minha, como a tua, sentindo-se a salvo,
em sua própria casa, é assassinada. Um terrorista
invade uma casa de uma família qualquer e sai
atirando: mata marido, mulher, sogro, filho. Terror:
não adianta mais nos escondermos em casa. Nem assim
estamos a salvo. Mais uma família destruída. E no dia
seguinte dois senhores, sobreviventes de campos de
concentração, encaminhando-se para a sinagoga de manhã
cedo são surpreendidos por um terrorista e
assassinados a facadas.
Eles sobreviveram a Hitler, sobreviveram ao genocídio
para morrerem indo rezar. Algumas horas depois uma
jovem palestina de 16 anos se explode na porta de um
supermercado em Jerusalém. Mata uma jovem israelense
de 16 anos. Duas jovens, da mesma idade. Uma morre
movida por um idealismo fanático, suicida. A outra
morre a força. Ela mata também o segurança do
supermercado que, devido a astúcia ao desconfiar de
uma criança inocente, evitou um número de mortos muito
maior. As fotos de todos os nossos mortos são diariamente
manchete no último ano e meio. A vida é banalizada.
Morte de inocentes, do lado de cá, do lado de lá:
difícil de conviver com isso. Vinte mil reservistas
estão convocados. Vinte mil pais de família em sua
maioria. E isso ganha contornos muito especiais quando
não se trata de anônimos e sim de Iariv, marido da
Ravit, minha amiga, e pai de Ofir de Shahaf, de 3
anos. Se trata de Chanan, marido de minha ex-cunhada,
um homem de 50 anos, e por aí a fora, muitos outros
nomes, muitas outras famílias como a minha, como a
tua. Leio nos jornais do Brasil reportagens que só
contam uma parte da história e isso me revolta.
Gostaria que todos vocês, judeus da diáspora, saibam
que estamos aqui lutando por nossa sobrevivência.
É uma luta muito dura onde o preço a ser pago é imenso
e na maioria das vezes. Uma luta muito mal vista pois
tem sido muito distorcida pelos meios de comunicação
internacionais. Não tenham vergonha de serem judeus.
Estamos lutando por nós mesmos mas também mandando
nossos filhos e filhas para a guerra, estamos lutando
por vocês.
Estamos lutando aqui por todos vocês para que o Estado
de Israel siga existindo. Para que possamos seguir a
ser um povo verdadeiramente livre.
